Many individuals seeking asylum have experienced traumatic events that continue to affect them long after the danger itself has passed.
These experiences may include:
• violence
• persecution
• political intimidation
• detention
• threats
• abuse
• forced displacement
Trauma can affect both the mind and body in profound ways.
For some asylum seekers, these experiences contribute to symptoms associated with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other trauma-related conditions.
Understanding trauma responses can help explain why many asylum seekers continue struggling emotionally even after reaching safety.

Trauma Can Affect the Nervous System
Trauma is not simply a painful memory.
Severe or prolonged stress can affect the nervous system itself, leaving individuals in a chronic state of fear, hypervigilance, or emotional overwhelm.
Some people feel constantly “on edge,” while others emotionally shut down or feel detached from themselves and the world around them.
These responses are common after trauma.
Common PTSD Symptoms in Asylum Seekers
PTSD symptoms may include:
• nightmares
• intrusive memories
• panic symptoms
• hypervigilance
• emotional numbness
• sleep disturbance
• irritability
• concentration difficulties
• fear and mistrust
Not every trauma survivor experiences symptoms in the same way.
Some individuals appear visibly distressed, while others may seem emotionally detached or flat when discussing traumatic experiences.
One important aspect of trauma is that it can affect memory.
Trauma survivors sometimes struggle with:
• remembering timelines clearly
• recalling details consistently
• organizing traumatic memories coherently
This does not necessarily mean the experiences are false.
Trauma often disrupts how memories are processed and stored.
This is one reason psychological evaluations are sometimes used in asylum cases — to help explain how trauma may affect emotional functioning and memory.
